My Counselling Approach
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Perth
What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective, evidence based therapy that helps individuals understand the connections between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It is based on the idea that our core beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world significantly influence our thoughts, which in turn affect how we feel and behave.
CBT involves working with a therapist to identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and replace them with balanced, helpful perspectives. Over time, this process leads to lasting improvements in how we feel and behave.

How Does CBT Work?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal-oriented approach typically involving several key steps. First, it focuses on identifying problematic thoughts by exploring the patterns that drive negative emotions and behaviours. Clients then learn techniques to challenge and reframe these thoughts, replacing them with more realistic, balanced perspectives. As thought patterns shift, clients develop new behaviours that positively impact their emotional responses and actions in challenging situations. Between sessions, clients often complete homework assignments, practising techniques and tracking thoughts to reinforce the skills learned in therapy. This structured approach empowers individuals to make lasting changes that improve their mental well-being.

What Can CBT Help With?
CBT is highly effective in addressing a wide range of mental health issues, including:
CBT reduces anxiety by helping individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns, enabling better control over anxious feelings and healthier responses to stress.
CBT effectively treats GAD, social anxiety, panic attacks, health anxiety, phobias, PTSD, and OCD by managing fear, avoiding triggers, and reducing intrusive thoughts, fostering peace and confidence.
For depression, CBT helps break negative thought cycles, reframes unhelpful beliefs, and develops strategies to improve mood and overcome depressive episodes, promoting a more positive outlook.
CBT builds self-esteem by replacing self-critical beliefs with a positive self-view, empowering individuals to feel more capable in personal and professional settings.
CBT enhances relationships by improving communication, conflict resolution, and empathy, addressing thought patterns that impact connections with others.
CBT teaches effective coping mechanisms, helping clients reduce the mental and physical impact of stress while building resilience for future challenges.
Substance Misuse and Addiction:
CBT helps clients identify triggers for addictive behaviours and develop long-term recovery strategies, supporting sustained sobriety.
CBT aids trauma recovery by reframing trauma-related thoughts, reducing emotional impact, and fostering healing through gradual exposure and supportive techniques.

Why Choose CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an effective, short-to-medium-term therapy, typically lasting between 8 to 20 sessions, depending on the issue. It is collaborative, empowering clients to take an active role in their healing process. The skills learned through CBT can be applied throughout life, making it a powerful tool for long-term mental well-being.

Other Counselling Modalities
While Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is my primary focus, I also incorporate other counselling modalities into my practice based on each client’s individual needs.

Gestalt Therapy:
Gestalt therapy is a holistic, client-centred and relational approach to personal development and growth. It focuses on fostering self-awareness and self-support, as well as living in the present moment and taking responsibility for oneself. These skills offer new possibilities and choices to live a more meaningful life.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy:
Mindfulness is a state in which the client learns how to increase their conscious awareness of the present moment in an open and non-judgemental manner. This therapeutic approach involves developing the skill of paying attention to various experiences, such as bodily sensations, thoughts, and feelings and accepting them without being influenced or impacted by them.

Person-Centred Therapy:
Person-centred therapy is underpinned by a belief that every human being strives for and has the capacity to fulfil their own potential. The therapist acts as a facilitator, listening without judgement and acknowledging the individual's lived experience. The therapist offers support, guidance, and structure so that the client can discover their own personalised solutions within themselves.

Solution-Focused Therapy:
Solution-focused therapy places focus on the client's present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences. In this goal-orientated therapy, clients are encouraged to develop a vision of their future and are offered the support, skills, resources and abilities needed to achieve their vision successfully.
My Personal Approach to Counselling
A genuine care for others fuels my passion for helping adults and young people achieve their goal of living a more fulfilled and enriched life.
My approach is warm, understanding and down-to-earth, and I offer you a safe and non-judgemental space to explore your challenges and concerns.

I firmly believe that most people are inherently motivated to grow and change and view counselling as a helpful means to acquire the support and skills necessary to achieve long-lasting positive personal growth.
I will encourage and assist you in becoming self-aware and finding your own personalised solutions, as I firmly believe you are the expert in your own life.
